The Monster King War
Around three hundred years ago, a tyrant from a small isle appeared with an army of monsters. The men of the neighboring isles were unprepared and overpowered by their beastly enemies. For decades this tyrant conquered its many neighboring islands to form what is Beistland today.
There was no end to The Monster King’s desire for land and power. They conquered the largest of the isles, Dun Dhia, their ambitions extended beyond the isles of Beistland, across the oceans. The Monster King proved to be a growing threat to the entire known world.
To defend themselves from The Monster King, the men of the Isle of Balla-Mara formed The Shepherds, a militia of monster tamers and their monster comrade in arms, or Monrades for short.
Many of the divided isles, as well as nations across the ocean, took notice of the Shepherds and their Monrades. Some began to form alliances with the militia to fight against a common threat.
Over a decade, The Shepherds militia and its growing allies chipped away at The Monster King’s army, reclaimed land and demoralized their enemy. Supplies waned and the injured grew, but the Monster King refused to surrender. Their march for glory for monsters became one of suffering and fear. Eventually only the most zealous of monsters continued to follow The Monster King, marking the beginning of the end.
In the final hours of the war, the monsters of Beistland pleaded for salvation. Their cries summoned a deity from the heart of Dun Dhia. This awakened deity, powered by the united wishes of monsters, defeated The Monster King and their monster army.
Before returning to the earth, the deity delivered a new law; to share the territories of Beistland equally among monsterkind and mankind and to never encroach on each other. The laws of the land have been unchanged since that day.
The Shepherds militia would be repurposed into The Shepherd's Guild and enforce this law to avoid another disaster like The Monster King War. The scars of mankind and monsterkind are deep and to this day The Shepherds make an effort to improve relationships between the two.
Like many events in history, records of the war have been lost to time leaving some details unclear, such as where exactly The Monster King originated and the means they used to acquire their power to command monsters. Records of The Monster King’s Generals are also lost.
However, what is clear is once the scars of war faded, mankind and the isles became more open to the idea of unity.
